Background
BH Civil Engineering is a construction company, providing quality formwork, reinforcement and concrete services across a range of impressive client projects. Formed in 2020 and based in the central belt of Scotland, their aim is to become one of the top construction companies in the UK, maintaining their reputation for excellence as they continue to grow. With bold ambitions, they approached tda! to help elevate their digital presence, ensuring their clients, contractors and future employees would be as impressed by their website as they are by their building sites.
Discovery
BH Civil Engineering initially approached us to create a new website as they were missing a key platform to direct potential customers to their business. Following a discovery workshop, we identified opportunities to provide additional support beyond the original brief. Whilst their old branding had served them well, a bold new look would position them as modern, confident and assured, giving them the edge to stand out in the UK market. We saw this as a great opportunity to enhance and strengthen their brand, ensuring the new website would do them justice and support their growth.
Branding
The company originally operated under the name “BH FRC LTD” (Ben Hall Formwork Reinforced Concrete Limited). As a complex acronym, we felt that this tongue-twister caused confusion and lacked memorability. With the growth of the company, they were also offering a broader list of services beyond formwork reinforced concrete. Our recommendation was to change to “BH Civil Engineering” - a more memorable, future-proofed option that better reflects the extensive range of the services they provide.
Visually, the new brand had to feel bold, modern and confident. The logo form was inspired by construction: blocky, cubic shapes to represent concrete foundations, and sharp, angular lines to mirror the mesh of steel rods that reinforce each structure. We used the “B” and “H” letterforms to create an abstract 3D cube, tying everything together. The font - New Science Extended - feels impactful, with the thick weight and wide letters linking to the strength and stability of concrete.
Building on the previous branding’s use of yellow as a bright and prominent accent, we intensified it to a zingy chartreuse which feels punchy and fresh. This neon green nods towards the high-vis vests often worn on site, whilst remaining firmly distinct from competitor colours. To offset this vibrant colour, we kept the rest of the brand dark and sleek, allowing the accent to shine and keeping the contrast high enough to work across a range of digital and physical applications. With bold, easily recognisable colouring, the new brand is not only impactful but also ideal for workwear, machinery, and all aspects of their operations.
Adding motion
With a shiny new logo in place, we created motion graphics to bring it to life, crafting a preloader animation to act as an introduction to the website. Shapes are “constructed” with faint lines, almost like an architect’s blueprint, building to reveal the new logo marque. This shape then transitions into the full logo. We felt it was important to highlight their range of services, and so the text gently loops through a series of offerings, “Plant hire”, “Restoration”, “Concrete”, “Reinforcement”, ”Formwork”, “Groundworks”, “Demolition” and “Consultancy”, before finally landing on “Civil Engineering”. In this way, a short story about the company is revealed before users interact with the website, helping to set the scene.
Wireframing
As BH Civil Engineering didn’t have an existing website, we worked collaboratively to map out content and build a new site structure. We developed wireframes to help visualise the page layouts, and once these were nailed down we brought the designs to life using the sleek new branding.
Website design & build
We wanted to ensure that the new brand encompassed more than just a logo - with colours, shape, form and typography that would be distinctly theirs. We used angular shapes from the logo to frame images and create interesting elements that capture the brand feeling throughout the website. Impressive drone videography creates an impactful homepage hero, drawing the audience in and inviting them to discover more. Subtle loading animations and UI interactions mirror the motion used in the preloader, balancing a modern and dynamic experience without being too overwhelming.
From a technical standpoint, we built the site using MODX. This allowed us to craft something fully bespoke without relying on templates, giving us total creative freedom. The site features a detailed catalogue of Projects, with each case study featuring key information and photos of the build. The Services page incorporates a subtle scrolling animation, breaking up the content. We also have a Team page with pop-out biographies, and a Careers area complete with vacancy listings and an application form, to help attract and manage future talent. As with all of our client projects, the website is fully responsive, working across all devices from mobile through to desktop.
The results
BH Civil Engineering were delighted with their refreshed brand, which gave them a modern edge to confidently progress with their next chapter of growth. The finished website offers a platform to showcase their impressive portfolio of work, including key projects like the restoration of the iconic Edinburgh Jenners building, as well as attracting new clients and new recruits.
We’re excited to continue working with BH Civil Engineering as their digital partner, supporting various projects including a recent run of advertising videos and motion graphics at Hibs' football stadium. We can’t wait to see what we build together next!
